Posted: Jan 19, 2007 13:18:00 I've tried to use the USB 2.0 to IDE Cable with 2 different hard drives. The system (XP Media) recognizes the drive as a USB Mass Storage Device, but is unable to complete the process. The red light on the IDE plug lights as does the green light on the power supply. The drive apparently is receiving power since the drive starts to get warm after a few minutes. There is no clicking in the drives to indicate that the discs are spinning and the device troubleshooter gives that same message - This device cannot start. (Code 10) I've uninstalled and reinstalled the device a number of times (moved the jumpers as well) without any success. Suggestions? |

Posted: Jan 19, 2007 13:41:56 · Edited by: tekgems A few possibilities: * The hard drive could be defective (if you are trying to recover data). * There may not be enough power going to the hard drive, happens if you are using USB 1.1. If the hard drive is not spinning up that usually indicates not enough power or bad hard drive. * USB to IDE unit is defective (the usb cable itself) If the hard drive is very old or very new, the hard drive controller board may not have been tested with the USB to IDE device. I do not know if you purchased this item from us, but we can not comment on the quality of other retailers. We painstakingly test all of our USB to IDE, USB to SATA, and USB to SATA/IDE power adapters to ensure they are receiving the 5V and 12V correctly. We can't vouch for the quality assurance process of other vendors. |

Posted: Jan 22, 2007 22:24:14 I got it to work! After receiving the error message "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I found a number of references to problems with pre 04 motherboards not providing enough power, even with USB 2.0. The following instructions were in the hardware section of www.PCHELL.COM . The easiest way to solve a USB error code 10 in Windows XP is to follow the steps below to remove and reinstall all USB controllers. A. Click on Start B. Right Click on My Computer, click on Properties C.Click on the Hardware tab D. Click the Device Manager button. E. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers section. F. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. G. Restart the computer, and allow the computer to reinstall the USB controllers. H. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved. It was a pretty easy fix. |
