I'm looking for an external case for a SATA hard disk with both SATA and USB 2.0 connections. Most of the time I would be using the disk on my desktop but from time to time I would like to plug it into my notebook. My notebook doesn't have a SATA connection but does have USB.

Is there such a monster? ...in aluminum?

Yes, they do exist. I found one manufacturer that makes a SATA HDD to external SATA and USB 2.0 aluminum case. But it is difficult to source. I speak the same language as the manufacturer but the sales manager is very difficult to get a hold of.
