Has anyone tried to install and boot Win XP on a external USB-drive? Installing by booting from the install CD doesn't work, install from DOS (with USB-drivers for DOS) doesn't work and taking an image with Symantec Ghost doesn't work. At least not for me!

I copied an XP partition to my USB-drive using Partition Magic.
Starting from the new USB partition works - at least until the XP boot process generates a bluescreen.

This is as far as I get.

Try booting with a Windows 98 startup disk - FAT16 or FAT32.

Symantec have released an updated ghmon.sys (url=http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/d87bb6ce0bde286d88 256d6a00452701/46596fbcc1df097c80256ed100392df7?OpenDocument&prod=Syma ntec%20Ghost&ver=8.x&src=ent&pcode=symghost&dtype=corp&svy=&prev=&mini ver=symghost_8) file.
(Computer reboots after attaching a USB flash drive)

The other thing to try would be to disable the IDE drivers before doing the partition copy, as you will find that the USB-IDE adapter uses different drivers then your motherboard chipset, in device manager highlight your IDE controller, click on update driver, then "I will choose the driver to install" in compatible devices there should be the driver you are using, and also a generic IDE driver, force to the generic driver then re-copy the partition to USB drive. However Partition Magic does sometimes have trouble copying bootable partitions, i would suggest using paragon HD utilities instead
