ƒ —› Infrared Hardware —› Can't get rid of red button

Well, I can't get the remote to work, despite having read everything I can find. I have the Packard Bell Fast Media Remote.

I am using Windows XP Pro, I have downloaded the zip file with the configs and serial watcher. So, I go through the process and the red button won't go away.

I have changed the speed of the com port in the device manager to make sure they match. I have tried changing the com port in the device manager, there is no IRQ conflict, and serial watcher shows that the remote is sending info and that it is being recieved.

1) Fresh batteries were installed

So this is the setup.

The serial port is assigned IRQ 3 by my bios, though I have also tried assigning it 4.

Device manager shows no other process using that IRQ, and it doesn't matter if I set the com port to 1 or 2.

I have tried the various speeds and the also tried adjusting them accordingly in device manager.

It is set as a DCD device, with transmitter setting at DTR and speed 115200, also pointing to the packard bell config file.

Bottom line, I can't get the button to even turn grey.

There is no need to adjust the serial port settings in Device Manager. The settings should be:

Bits per second: 9600
Data bits: 8
Partity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None

Click on the Restore Defaults button to bring it back to normal.

-- When you are using WinLIRC, it is important that SerialWatcher is also not running. SerialWatcher takes a control of the serial port and will not let any other device operate on that COM port.

-- You are troubleshooting on a desktop, and not a laptop correct?

Well, my point was that I had the original settings (the ones you posted) and it didn't work, and I even tried changing them. I also did a clean install of Windows, still nothing. Also, I never had serial watcher running at the same time, and on the clean install of Windows I didn't have anything else running at the same time, other than non-IRQ using processes.

Oh yes, on a desktop sorry

That's very strange SerialWatcher is receiving a signal, but WinLIRC is not. Send it back and we'll send you a tested replacement. Thanks.

Well, I think it is strange as well, so let me test it on my brothers computer to see if it is a computer issue? I hope that it is not in some way incompatible with my hardware (I know the serial port works as I have used it for other things).

Hi, I too recently purchased one of these remotes, And I have a rather interesting situation.

I ave several machines, one is an old slot 1 board, runn win 98se and the remote functions perfectly on it.

however, the machine i wish to use it with, dual boots 98se and xp pro

I have simmilar problems, except my ir mouse receiver shows a signal from the mouse but the included receiver does not even send data to the com port.

I have tried almost every setting, from the bios to windows hardware manager. I suspected my serial modem may have something to do with the problem, but even without it the problem remains.

I am using a gigabyte GA-7zx board in this machine.

any suggestions or comment would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

As per my previous post, My motherboard did have a defective serial port connection, the device works well on my newer machine (purchased several months ago) and the only issues I have now are software related.
