Works great with my two GPS units (Magellan SporTrac Pro Color and Gramin Foretrex 101)!

Hi Sandy - Unfortunately, Vista drivers are not included on the CD. For now, download the zip file and run the Vista_Installer.exe file inside. Do this before you plug the USB cable in. Once the Installer finishes, install the USB cable which will automatically detect your USB to Serial cable.

Some customers are using this cable for ViewSat VSPRO, Ultra, and Ultra 2. ViewSat is a PVR (DVR) product that has a serial port. You can use this cable to interface with the ViewSat product with the appropriate "gender" converter.

I have installed the Vista Driver, plug into the USB port, the cable was recognized. However, I found the download speed is very low. I have increase the Bits per second to 115200 via Device Manager, but it still takes around 10 minutes to download 896KB. Did I don't something wrong. Could you please advice me how to increase download speed? Thanks in advance.

You are looking at the right product. This is a USB to Serial (DB9) and is Vista compatible.

I didn't see anyone actually address this, so... Google for Prolific 2303 and you'll stumble across Prolific's driver download site to get the latest OS X drivers that work flawlessly for 10.5. The device shows up in the Network Preference Pane (for PPP/SLIP) and in the /dev tree as cu.usbserial or tty.usbserial. This is how I connect (using "cu") to the serial ports of the various network devices I have to maintain.

It sounds like you plugged in the USB cable before running the Vista Installer Driver. If you install the cable first, then you will have problems with cable being recognized. You must run the installer first, then install the cable. At this point, you need to uninstall the cable from Device Manager (look for the yellow exclamation), restart your computer, run the installer.exe then plug in the USB cable. Alternative, just plug the USB cable into a different USB port after running the installer.

Hi there,
I just purchased 4 cables - first of all, thanks for the informative site. The screenshots were the reason I bought the cables from your site - shows a committed seller!
Quick question though (should've asked before purchasing :)) - the specs claim that the cable will work at 1MBps - have you tested it at that speed?
TekGems :
Posted 464 days ago
Hi, we have not tried using with a null modem to transfer files at 1 Mbps. We use the cable at our location for a scale which only requires 9600bps.

I've downloaded the driver for vista, but still can't get it to work. I've run the program, rebooted the system and plugged the cable in. Vista still reports "Windows
needs to install driver software or your unknown device". I choose "locate and install driver software". It still doesn't work. Any ideas?
TekGems :
Posted 456 days ago
If the driver installation failed, you need to uninstall that driver from Device Manager. Alternatively, you can also try plugging your USB cable to a different USB port and detection phase will restart. Finally, your e-mail does not match any we have on record so it is possible the driver you are using does not match your cable.

I installed the drivers for usb to r232 db9 vista. I plugged the cable in and installs with port4. I use my toshiba pdr-m1 camera to down load. No files will download. Do you know what the problem could be. When I issue the aquire for photos on camera it comes up in white and no photos show up. It seems not to be working.

The USB to Serial cable is set to COM4 by default, but you can force to a different com port if your software requires a specific port such as COM1 or COM2. Go to Device Manager, Ports, and double click on COM4. Under Port Settings tab, click on Advanced. You can select your new COM port. You may need to disable an existing COM1 or COM2 if you must use those ports.

For anyone planning to use Ascom pulse guiding (for anyone starting out to do autoguided photography) with a modern laptop you will need a USB to serial converter since serial ports are also lacking on newer laptops. Adapters based on the prolific chipset seem to work well I learned from various astronomy related forums and web pages. I have two of these cheap (but good) adaptors - one for guiding and the other for triggering my DSLR.

Hi there, you are my final hope in fixing a problem.
I purchased the USB to Serial (9-pin) DB-9 RS-232 Adapter Cable
(Prolific chipset) SBT-USC1M / CBL-USB-CS1B
in order to connect a hardware device to my laptop. The hardware is the QDS Focus. The QDS focus then connects to a software program called Bioexplorer. Every time I turn on the QDS focus, the bioexplorer program crashes. Obviously the QDS focus and the Bioexplorer companies will not take the blame. I have the Vista 64 and I just purchased it this december. I did download the file usc1m-pl2303-usbdb9-vista.zip. and installed it.
When my computer crashes, it is the blue screen with the message..Windows has detected a violation with a driver and needs to close.
I have uninstalled your driver a few times, but it has not helped.
thanks

I saw a previous posting that said this cable was MAC OS compatiable. Does the CD contain the driver information for MAC?
Glen :
Posted 8 days ago
Kathy, don't know if you have been answered or not, but Apple themselves hosts the driver for this here:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/drivers/pl2303usbtoserialdriver.html
(hope they let me post links)
That is the driver recommended by Apple for this part. It was written SPECIFICALLY for this exact part, actually, even though it also works for other USB-to-Serial adapters on the same Prolific PL2303 chipset.
