I have recently purchased your Packard Bell Fast Media Remote Control. However, it did not come with any software. I bought this to control my PC from across the room (to turn the voume up, down, and change songs, etc.). What (free) software can be used? I was expecting some to come with it. I tried various softwares, but nothing seemed to work properly.

Aside from what is already in the description, you can try a search engine. This product is meant to be DIY. If you need software with the hardware, you might try a search for USB remote control.

Got this working in linux. Need to compile lirc with the "--with-driver=packard_bell". Serial ports must be disabled in the kernel, or you can turn off the specific serial port using:
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none
Then, install the lirc module using:
modprobe lirc_serial type=3 io=0x3f8 irq=4
You can then test the sensor using the mode2 command of lirc, or start lircd using the --nodaemon option.
