Hey, just thought you might want to know.. there is no difference between the ms28 and the ms25 except the firmware, which you can change yourself.. so if you have 25... flash it to 28, it work fine.
TekGems :

It depends on the case we open from the factory, but some drives have firmware of MS25 and others say MS28.

FYI - This vendor is legally obligated to NOT inform you the customer how to make this drive function with your Xbox. It will require the encryption key from the drive that was shipped with your Xbox. There are two ways to do this: Easiest: Open up the drives and swap the circuit board from the old unit to the new unit. Be careful. Hopefully you have identical drives... More difficult: peruse the internet for 3rd party software to reprogram the firmware (read firmware from both drives, and swap the original encryption key into the new firmware and then reload the firmware onto the new drive). It will require booting both drives on a Windows machine with a SATA interface as another DVD-ROM device. There is a possibility the firmware reprogramming may fail and completely ruin the drive...
Good Luck

I just bought a brand new drive for my Xbox that is the same model as my older one but it still won't read the disk. The screen says either open tray or you must have an Xbox 360 to play this disk.

You will need the orginal firmware for you old drive. Then use frimtool to extract the drive key and insert it in the firmware for this drive. Flash it back to the new drive and you should be able to play games.

Hello, I believe my xbox drive made a wierd noise today and stopped working. Continues opening and will not close. when it does close it doesnt read any disk. Id like to purchase a new drive however I am not sure what is meant by flashing?

When it comes to flashing, it is not for the faint of heart. This is not as simple as taking the old drive out and putting the new one in. You will need to extract the DVD key to swap them out. For all intents and purposes, you basically need to follow the same instructions you would if you were to put a modified firmware on your drive. This is basically what you are doing after all. You back up your old firmware, and put it on the new drive. It is a LOT easier when doing this to and from an Ms25 than an Ms28. Ms28 has protections but that is beyond the scope of my input. Use google. It is your friend. Try 360mods.net . Read up on how to dump the ORIGINAL DVD's firmware. KEEP IT SAFE. Then flash the new drive with the original firmware. Presto.

Wow, I heard of all the hassles with flashing new DVD drives when replacing drive in the Xbox 360. By just replacing the board from your old drive and installing it in a new drive is too easy. I was up and running in 10 minutes. Thanks for the tip.

Each drive has a serial number that is tied to the system. You need the same serial number when you replace a drive. I don't know how replacing a drive with a different brand drive works.

For anyone considering a replacement drive: You need to open your console and verify what drive you have (Samsung/toshiba - Phillips - Benq - Hitachi). Swapping the drive motherboards will only work on select models, namely the Samsung TS-H943. Otherwise you must flash the drive programming which can be a very complicated task, requires specific equipment and risks ruining the drive. I have successfully flashed drives, and let me assure you that it is not a simple task. Many programs exist to aid in this, but unless you get the exact programs and software for the exact hardware, it won't work out.

alof of people seem confused, and dont take it the wrong way, i dont know that much either but if your xbox360 has a samsung drive you have to buy a samsung drive not a benq. Now can someone PLEASE tell me if swapping the dvd drives pcb board will work. For example, i have ms25 can i buy a ms25 or ms28 and just swap the drives mobo.? No one has really responded to people asking this. I do know how to flash somewhat. So would it be easier just to buy a new samsung drive ms25 or ms28 and flash it with aftermarket firmware? If someone could give me some input it would be greatly appreciated.
