The 3Com EtherLink III Parallel Tasking PCMCIA network adapter (3C589B) lets you connect a computer to an IEEE 802.3 standard Ethernet network. This adapter operates in computers containing Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Release 2.1, Type II or Type III slots.

There are two types of 3C589B adapter cable: the 3C589B-TP 10BASE-T (twisted-pair) cable, which has an RJ-45 connector, and the 3C589B-COMBO adapter cable, with a BNC connector that can connect to thin coax or twisted-pair networks. Both cables connect to the 3C589B adapter.

3C589B Adapter Features

The 3C589B adapter has the following features:

  • Parallel Tasking for greater speed.
  • Automatic adapter configuration.
  • Compliance with IEEE 802.3 10BASE2 (3C589B-COMBO only) and 10BASE-T standards.
  • Integrated Card Services support.
  • "Hot Swap" support (you can remove the adapter without rebooting the computer).
3C589B Adapter Requirements

To use the adapter successfully, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Your computer must have a PCMCIA Release 2.1, Type II or Type III card slot and a 3 1/2-inch diskette drive.
  • Your computer must be running DOS 3.1 or higher.
  • Your computer must have an 80286 or higher processor.
  • You must have access to a network port.
  • If your computer is using an extended or expanded memory manager (all computers using Microsoft Windows TM use a memory manager) and you do not have Card Services installed, you must exclude upper memory. Refer to the section "Avoiding Memory Manager Conflicts" in Appendix A for a sample procedure.
