The USB to DB25 Female adapter allows you to connect existing reliable printers (e.g. HP) to use with new computers (desktops, notebook, etc) that do not have have a parallel port but does have a USB port. For most customers, customers extend their existing printer cable (which has a DB25 Male ending) and connect to the DB25 Female end of this cable. Then the USB cable connects to their computer. The DB25 Male connector has 25 pins arranged in two rows one on top of the other. The top row has 13 holes and the bottom row has 12 holes.

FAQ:
I have a HP printer that has a Mini Centronics 36 on it, will this cable work?
Yes, continue using the cable you currently own. Since your desktop or laptop does not a DB25 female port, you buy this cable and plug your old printer cable into it.
Can I use with cable with my security dongle for my sewing machine?
No, you will require a true parallel port card - for desktop a PCI Card or for laptop a CardBus or ExpressBus Parallel Port card. They run about $30 each.
Will my printer work with this cable?
That depends. First, you must check with your operating system to see if your printer is supported. For example, in XP you would go Start, Control Panel, Add Printers to see if your Brand and Model is listed. If not, you would check with the printer manufacturer to see if printer driver software exists for your operating system. Very old printers may not be supported in Vista. In this case, buying this printer would still result in a non-working printer. If your printer is supported for the operating system you are using, you can buy this printer cable extender.
Disclosure:
Question: Will this work with an all-in-one, like the HP LaserJet 3015 AIO?
Answer: The printer portion will work since the cable behaves like a USB Virtual Printer Port. It is not a true parallel port, so functions like SCAN and FAX that originate from the PC/laptop will not be possible. You can still FAX from the all-in-one or even COPY since using the all-in-one in this way does not involve the computer. If you want to SCAN and FAX from the PC/laptop you will need to spend more money and buy PCI computer card with a parallel port or a CardBus laptop card with a parallel port for full compatibility with All-In-One devices.
I have an HP 4500 Color Laserjet printer that I need to connect to a new computer. The computer has a USB connection and my printer has a male connector (so the cable has to be female.) It looks like this cable will work but I am not sure. HP's web page says it needs a IEEE 1284 cable. Will this cable work. If so do you have it in 8'? Thank you

Do you already have the printer cable for your LaserJet? Your HP printer has connector called a "Micro Centronics 36 Male". If you don't, you'll need to get first - Parallel cable that is Micro Centronics 36 Male on one end and DB25 Male on the other end. Then you buy our USB to DB25 Parallel Female 6ft Cable Converter Adapter which connects to the first cable. - http://www.homeavcables.com/centronics-connectors.html IEEE-1284 Type C found on some HP printers. The Micro Centronics 36 connector has 36-pins arranged in two rows one on top of the other. The top row has 18 pins and the lower row has 18 pins. - Cables C2946A 3 m (10 ft) Parallel Cable (IEEE-1284 compliant) with a 25-pin DB Male to a (IEEE-1284C) Male C-Connector - Primary/Source Connector (1) DB25 Male Secondary/Device Connector Micro Centronics 36 Male

I like this cable very much. It was pretty easy to install. You just plug it in and then you make the printer port for your printer "Virtual Printer Port for USB" - USB001 (or whatever the highest number is).

I own a HP 500 PSC, I bought the USB to DB25F cable but my computer does not recognize the printer. I tried restarting and repluging, but still does not print. Suggestions please.
TekGems :
Posted 975 days ago
For your computer to recognize is a part issue: 1) you need to install printer software, 2) assign the correct port (in this case USB001) to that printer. The USB to Parallel (DB25F) does not require drivers and will be recognized as USB Virtual Printer device by Windows.

According to the technical specs on the site, the printer has USB 1.1 and regular parallel port. So, you could just use a regular USB cable. Or the other USB to Parallel printer cable, although a USB cable is cheaper. http://www.minolta-qms.com/products/monochrome/pp1350W/tech.asp If you are trying to share the printer with two computers (one USB and the other parallel), I don't recommend it. Many printers do not have queue management which will confuse your printer when more than one computer tries to print to it.

TekGems :
Posted 910 days ago
We have heard from other customers that since this cable acts as a "USB Virtual Printer Port" it is bi-directional, but the cable is not capable of ECP nor EPP. For ECP or EPP support, you would need to buy a parallel port PCI card that would provide a true parallel port versus a Virtual Printer Port.

You can buy a new router with USB printer support. I do not know if USB to Parallel cables will work with the router - that would depend on the router and what kind of support it has for USB to Parallel cables (if at all).

I couldn't get this cable to work with a fairly vanilla parallel port scanner. This is on Vista (didn't try XP). I tried installing the drivers that came with the cable, but it wasn't clear which one, and the install didn't seem to succeed anyway. Is this config supposed to work?
TekGems :

The drivers on the CD are for Windows 98SE only. The cable uses the native operating systems and Windows recognizes the device as a USB Virtual Printer Port. The product is designed to be used only for printers.

You should know many older HP printers (without USB) will likely not work on Vista. The HP printers are too old. Instead of providing drivers for these older models, HP is encouraging upgrade to newer products with USB ports that is supported in Vista. Here is what HP had to say on the matter:
"We are sorry to inform you that there will be no Windows Vista support available for your HP product. Therefore your product will not work with Windows Vista. If you are using the Windows Vista operating system on your computer, please consider upgrading to a newer HP product that is supported on Windows Vista. HP has numerous products on the market that support Windows Vista."

The product is designed for printing only. Your all-in-one will still perform copy since that is not dependent on the computer. Scanning will not work, unless you buy a PCI card with a parallel port. Well sell those too. We have a great one by HP that has a Oxford chipset (one of the best quality chipsets available) that works in all OS including 2000, XP, and Vista.

I am trying to use an old officejet R80xi with a new acer laptop (USB cables only) and Windows XP. I have the original ieee 1284 compliant printer cable and I know that the cable you sell (Product No: 18030) will fit convert its db25 output into USB. So my question is this - what if my computer does not recognize this "new" combined cable as a plug and play printer? (I don't need the scan function). I have never installed the printer on this laptop, so drivers are not already resident. Also, I just tried going through the manual process and it shows me the r80Xi printer icon, but I don't see how I can select the option for "Virtual Printer Port for USB" - USB001. My only options are LPT 1,2,3, COM 1-5, File, microsoft document imaging writer port and IR. So again, i'm stumped how this will work with the R80xi, unless you're telling me that I just plug in your cable into my old printer and it will become "plug and play" and instantly recognize my printer and install everything i need?
TekGems :
Posted 809 days ago
You plug the USB cable by itself into the Acer laptop. That will allow the laptop to recognize the USB cable. You will also need to install the printer software which is a separate procedure. Once the printer software is installed, you can connect the two printer cables together then select USB001 (or whatever is greatest) as the printer port for the newly installed printer.

I have an HP Laser 5 p and want to convert to USB port on my dell laptop. The cable with the printer is hardwired to the printer and is male IEEE1284. Which cable do you recommend?
TekGems :
Posted 808 days ago
Hi, the IEEE 1284 is an interface standard and does not specifically state the connector type, so I will assume you have a DB25 Male. Our USB to DB25 Female cable is an add-on to your existing cable. Also, your printer cable is probably not hardwired. Your HP printer should have a plastic flap that is removable giving you access to the end of the cable should you need to replace it for any reason.

I purchased this cable but am having trouble getting my HP laserjet 1100 to print properly. When I click print the first thing I get is a printer error box that disapears in a few seconds and the printer prints the page. I assume that this is because the USB port is coveying information quicker than the DB25 is responding. But the main issue is that the page doesn't print right. Several letters are missing and many are garbled. Is there something I can do to correct this?
TekGems :
Posted 794 days ago
The most common cause of gibberish is using the wrong printer driver. For example, if you use a driver for an inkjet printer to print to a laser printer, the resulting print will be gibberish. This will also be the case if you send postscript codes to a printer that doesn’t support postscript printing.
But why do you sometimes get gibberish even when you’re using the right driver? Laser printers hold a print job in memory until the entire page has been received before printing that page. If the person who printed before you used the wrong driver, then it’s likely that some remnants of that print job remain in memory. When you send your print job, your job is appended to what’s already in the printer’s memory, resulting in gibberish. The standard solution to this problem is to reboot the printer.
Occasionally, you may run into a situation in which no one has used a bad driver, but the printer is spewing out garbage anyway. There are several reasons why this can happen. One is that the printer cable is loose (this usually only applies to parallel printing). Check both ends of the cable, reboot the printer, and then reboot the PC that’s hosting the printer.

I have used this type cable for my Acer vista notebook to my HPLJ6mp -- worked like a charm for 1 month then 2 days ago suddenly kept getting error messages -- print fies would sit in the queue with error even tho the printer control panel recognized the printer -- which I think is cable failure. Printer works fine through network w/other computers fine. VISTA will load the LJ6 driver when directly connected to the printer. Probably because I had to consistently unplug the parallel end so another computer on our network could print (dont' have a printer switch) VISTA will not load the LJ6 network driver, it will only load the LJ6postcript network driver, but large files will bomb out. I'd rather run the plain LJ6 driver. I'm having to buy a new cable to see if its my 'virtual" USB port driver or actually the cable that went bad. (not to mention other 'vista' issues ;-(

I am using a USB to DB25 Female Parallel Printer Cable Adapter and with OS 9 it worked GREAT. With OS 10 it starts to print OK then prints a lot of symbols the stop printing and feeds the sheet out and starts a new sheet to print more. H E L P RBKay

I have a LaserJet 1100. I first plugged in this cable. Made sure that it was detected as a printer support device. Then plugged in the printer cable (male end) to this cable- and voila - the printer was installed. Great (and extremely inexpensive) solution to make your 1100 compatible with a USB port.

"Has anyone successfully used this cable to connect a usb port to a HP designjet large format plotter. I have a HP 450c that I need to connect directly with a new Hp laptop that only has USB ports. I purchased this cable to connect to the existing parallel cable. The cable installs ok, but when I attempt to plot, the plotter never responds." Have same problem. What was your prognosis?

Thank you so very much, my helpers at TekGems!! Thanks to your cable and your helpful email, I am now able to use my old printer, the HP PSC500, with my new Compaq computer. A computer tech here told me it was impossible to make the printer work with the new computer, and I decided to google the problem, and came up with a blog with your name on it--that's how I got your name. Thank you so much! Peace, Alice

I have a Lenmarks Z23 printer and a Dell L1000R. Do I connect through the USB cable? The Connection on my tower labeled for the "printer" is not a USB, but the printer only has a USB connection. Do I just go into the USB on the tower? I'm confused.

I have an H P 2100 Laser jet printer with a 25 pin male connector, which I understand needs a IEEE 1284 compatible cable. Will this cable allow me to connect to a Dell Vista computer? Thank you.

YES. In Vista, please test by adding the printer manually and see if your model is listed. If your printer is not listed, the cable will be of no use to you. Thanks.

I just upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit OS, and the LPT-USB cable adapter that I was using (not this model) requires me to boot up my system by pressing the F8 key and booting with "Disabled Driver Signature Enforcement", because the supplied driver is unsigned. If I buy this particular cable, will I have the same problem? Or, is the supplied driver digitally signed so Win 7 (or Vista) 64-bit OS will accept it without me having to boot up while pressing the F8 key? Thanks.

I have no idea. Windows 7 was just released yesterday. It takes time for drivers to be signed and/or re-made. This is the price you pay for being an early adopter.

I had this cable working fine with my HP 100 connected to my Windows XP Professional machine. Now I am getting "USB Device Not Recognized." I don't know how to resolve the issue and cannot print. Help, anyone?

My HP R80 printer uses a cable that connects to an old PC with a 1284c connector. Would the USB to DB 25 adaptor allow me to use it with a new computer that has no parallel port?

1284 cable. Will this cable work. If so do you have it in 8'? Thank you

IEEE-1284 Type C found on some HP printers. The Micro Centronics 36 connector has 36-pins arranged in two rows one on top of the other. The top row has 18 pins and the lower row has 18 pins.

If you are trying to share the printer with two computers (one USB and the other parallel), I don't recommend it. Many printers do not have queue management which will confuse your printer when more than one computer tries to print to it.
Can you tell me the manufacturer and model number of this parallel to USB interface cable? I live in England and wish to ensure that it will work prior to purchase. Thank you.
thanks for your time and experience.

Based on the cable shown in the manual, you would buy this cable to fit on your laptop that has a USB port and other end fits with the cable supplied by HP.

That means you can use our la-par03 USB to Parallel (Centronics 36 Male) cable.
For Vista compatibility for DesignJet products:

For other printer models, an easy way to check Vista compatibility is to Add A Printer (Settings, Control Panel, Hardware & Sound, Printers) and see if your printer model is supported. Detailed steps are available here: http://tinyurl.com/2k8o84
Thanks a bunch!

p.s. HPIJS also works lots of other printers besides HP printers.

We do not have much experience with the cable being used with a plotter.
I want to datasheet and diagram can
the db25 to usb
thank you
Probably because I had to consistently unplug the parallel end so another computer on our network could print (dont' have a printer switch)
VISTA will not load the LJ6 network driver, it will only load the LJ6postcript network driver, but large files will bomb out. I'd rather run the plain LJ6 driver.
I'm having to buy a new cable to see if its my 'virtual" USB port driver or actually the cable that went bad. (not to mention other 'vista' issues ;-(
Thanks
We're about ready to throw out the 3100 laser printer and start over.
Any suggestions?
The LaserJet 4100 is supported in Vista.
Thanks!
What operating system are you using with the printer and do you know if your printer works for that operating system? HP says your printer works for Vista: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00808536 #A5
