I need to know if I can recover the data from a mirrored raid setup if the device fails (i.e. physically damaged) and I plug one of the HDD's into another USB external drive bay (into a Windows Vista PC). I need redundancy for my data (both in the data itself, and how I access the data). I have tried using a few different NAS devices, but they all seem to use modified Linux file systems which cannot be read from anything other than the device itself, so if the device fails or is damaged I cannot access my data until I buy another one (assuming it is still available on the market). TekGems : Posted 169 days ago If the enclosure is physically damaged, you still can access the drive either by connecting directly to the motherboard or using a USB to SATA/IDE adapter. When you configure the enclosure as RAID 1 (Mirror Mode), removing hd1 will allow you to use the drive in single drive mode. If you remove hd0, the enclosure will not work as this is by design of the DS3R-PRO. If drive hd0 is defective, you could move hd1 to hd0 position and continue using the drive in single drive mode. I spent few days triyng to get to work the hardware and failed. Manufacturer's system utilty for Silicon Image chipset it uses (57xx SteelVine Manager) indicates it is locked and keeping the drive settings. It doesn't accept HDD replacement complaining for serial numbers mismatch. I can't flash the firmware because password is protected.
